Upbeat Marketing has been privileged to volunteer our time to the 12th Annual Ministers Cup Golf Tournament benefiting The Samaritan Center on Monday, October 24th, 2011. We received an unexpected phone call in June from tournament director Don Ames who noticed the “upbeat” Upbeat Marketing logo on a community calendar at church. Curious about Upbeat Marketing and our services, Don gave us a call! Little did he know, Suzanne (founder of Upbeat) comes from a long line of golfers and was happy to donate marketing and PR services.
Initially, our involvement was geared toward generating creative ways of inviting women to participate in the tournament. Participation in the event has been predominantly male over the past 11 years. As a female athlete herself, Suzanne reached out to a group of ladies who are both small business owners and are also devoted to promoting healthy living. Several great volunteers were recruited and then combined with Don’s female contacts to create the first ever Women’s Committee for the tournament.
One of the ideas that emerged was to honor an influential woman in Austin. We are pleased to announce that Jody Conradt, former UT Women’s Basketball Coach and Legend, has generously volunteered her time and services. She will be honored for her contributions to the community at this year’s Ministers Cup.
In addition, we’ve discounted play for women participants this year and have set up an entire day of rest and relaxation for the ladies who prefer not to play. Barton Creek Resort and Spa has kindly opened up their pool, spa and fitness center for little to no cost for the ladies. We’ll also have the 18 hole putt-putt course available for free use during the tournament. A dinner and silent auction will follow the tournament as well.
Following the generation of the ladies committee and activities, it was time to create NEW messaging around the entire tournament. Our team created new flyers and special Save the Date postcards with a call directly to the wives and women. Following the completion of a new press release, we are currently working to build partnerships with local media for promotional purposes.
KLGO The Word is graciously conducting three interviews with their radio show hosts and just finished recording a PSA for The Ministers Cup. We are so thankful for donated media attention for this great event! Please take note of the following interviews:
Kathryn Bonner – October 3 – 2:30-3:00pm
Amy Dillon – October 5 – 7:00-7:30am
Ryan Rush – October – TBA

About The Ministers Cup
The Ministers Cup was created in 1999 with the goal to benefit families who could not afford to pay for mental health counseling services provided by the Samaritan Center. The first year’s goal was to raise $10,000 and actual benefits more than doubled that amount. More than $500,000 in total has been raised for the Samaritan Center and its mission of delivering interfaith mental health counseling services during the past 11 Ministers Cup tournaments.
The 2011 tournament aims to bring 36 six-player church teams to Barton Creek Club’s Crenshaw Cliffside course along with their pastors, priests, rabbis or other clergy. Our goal is to fundraise $75,000. This year’s event will provide for many families who need such counseling and help continue the center’s mission and programs, including the Hope for Heroes initiative for veterans and military families.
